SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):430 (abstract no. PD0327). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370696 AB OBJECTIVE: To develop, implement and evaluate an educative intervention focused on increasing awareness and knowledge about HIV/AIDS, as well as skills in communication in a rural community (10,000 inhabitants). METHODS: Our National Centre collaborated with the NGO Princess Margaret Foundation in Romania in organising the training of the medical staff with the pilot dispensary, the teachers and the students in the 3 schools in a village. Students were also selected as leaders for peer education. RESULTS: Inovative educational interventions ensure high level of retention of HIV/AIDS messages. Community bonding has also been achieved. About 200 trainers and group leaders are already functioning and 3,500 young people have been reached by the educational program. An increase in using condoms was noticed. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: When evaluating the results there was noticed that used methods are suitable to a rural population. The adaptable nature of the model has enabled it to be made appropriate for differing local situations in Romania and abroad.
